'Twas the Night Before Christmas

While you're reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas or The Christmas Carol or any other favorite story, you just might need a special bookmark! These bookmarks are easy to make and are a great gift for your students. If your students have access to computers they can make them too!

Here are the instructions using Pages (on a Mac). These instructions can be adapted to any word processing program.

  1. Open Pages, choose a blank document.
  2. Screen_shot_2009-11-22_at_10.19.41_PM.pngScreen_shot_2009-11-22_at_10.02.06_PM.pngClick on the shapes icon in the menu bar and choose the rectangle with curved corners.
  3. You can make these any size you want. I made them 7.5 inches x 1.5 inches.
  4. Change the color of the rectangle to the color o

f your choice - Open the Inspector, click on the shapes icon, (make sure your rectangle is highlighted), then choose Color Fill. Click inside of the color selected to change it to something else.
  1. Add a graphic to one end (or both) of the bookmark. Make sure the graphic faces the right direction.
  2. To rotate the graphic, go to the Inspector. Choose the ruler icon. At the bottom of that window you'll see a rotate wheel. You can either turn the wheel, or type in 180˚ or 270˚.
  3. If you want the same image on the other end of the magnet, click on the image once.

Hold down the option key and drag the image. This should make an exact copy of the image. Place it on the opposite end of the bookmark.
  1. If you want text on one of the magnet, click on the text box in the menu. Type the student's name. Use the rotate wheel again to turn the text box and place it where you want.
  2. Make a whole page of bookmarks then print them on cardstock.
  3. Cut them out. If you have a corner rounder for scrapbooking that works real slick on the corners.
  4. Fold down the center of the magnet.
  5. Stick one piece of sticky magnet on the inside of the bookmark first, then add the other piece of magnet to it. Take the backing off of the magnet then lay the bookmark carefully on top of the magnet.
